Cetona - Palazzo Vitelli
16th Century Palace , with panoramic covered roof terrace and wonderful frescoes.
Palazzo Vitelli is an ancient Palace built in the second half of the sixteenth century by General Vitelli, named Marquis by Cosimo Primo de 'Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany. It is one of the most historically relevant palaces of Cetona, where on the 17th of July 1849 Giuseppe Garibaldi, fleeing from Rome to the North, was greeted by a cheering crowd and spent the night there, as guest of the Gonfaloniere Gigli, who in 1800 became the new owner of the Palace. A marble plaque on the façade commemorates this event.
In the atrium you can still see some elements of the original structure .
A momentous travertine staircase leads to the jewel of the Palace which is the apartment on the second floor which has remained untouched over the years, with balustrades, columns, walls and vaulted ceilings adorned with beautiful trompe l'oeil frescoes and statues. The floors are in marble, parquet, and precious majolica.
From the invaluable and unique panoramic covered roof terrace fitted with large windows, you can appreciate a stunning view of the sixteenth-century main square of Cetona, where Villa la Vignola ,owned by fashion designer Valentino, stands out with its yellow building immersed in the green of its park and Mount Cetona, lush with oak and olive trees .
The apartment on the noble floor, consists of a private travertine entrance staircase which leads to a hallway delimited by a balustrade of marble columns, where the large living room with ceilings and walls painted with trompe l'oeil overlooks. The windows oversee a beautiful private garden. The large kitchen has a fireplace, dining room, two spacious bedrooms, with vaulted ceilings and flooded with so much light that enters from the two windows looking towards Via Roma and Piazza di Cetona. A small room, which also overlooks a beautiful private garden and two bathrooms complete this floor. A wooden staircase leads to the beautiful panoramic covered roof terrace.
